My Experiences on Eyebrow Laser Tattoo Removal

Why did I decide to get my eyebrow embroidery (tattoo) removed?
It was a week before CNY and I wanted to get my brows touched up since I have left it alone for a year or so. I've been recently into "Korean" brows that look straighter and more demure in a way, less fierce than an arched brow. I wanted to have a friendlier and more approachable look so I decided to look up online for beauty shops that offer a more natural eyebrow embroidery technique.

The last time I did my brows, I went to Irene in Toa Payoh (went because of QiuQiu's blog). Irene does Korean 4D embroidery but it was friggin' ex.. $488 for one time eyebrow embroidery + one touch up. Well maybe it was ex for me as I did my brows previously at Salon #1 (Bishan) and prices were a fraction, thou disclaimer was that Salon #1 did normal embroidery not the 4D type.

Thus I looked on coupark.com hoping to get a deal for 4D embroidery and I found a $68 deal for Best Beauty Salon. I decided to try only because it was cheap and near my place. But I didn't buy the coupon because I was told I could head down to the shop for a consultation first to make sure Im suitable for the service.

I went down, excited & nervous to try out the new place....... The manager of Best Beauty took one look at my brows and said that they're "spoilt", that the previous beautician had recked my brows. By that I think she meant that the colour of my brows had turned slightly off...like to a slight greenish-black kinda colour (tho it was not the "auntie-green-tattoo" kinda colour). She said that if I wanted to get new brow I should laser the old colours off first before getting new ones because if I did new colour over the old brows, the spoilt colour would still show under my new brows (like a double tone).

Example of 2-toned brows.
(Taken from http://www.laser-tattoo-removals.info/ )

Obviously you would have agreed to do a tattoo laser first right, it only makes more sense. I've never done nor enquired on laser tattoo removal ever, so I didn't know how much was the market price. I was quoted $388 which includes tattoo laser removal for my brows (unlimited times till the colour totally washes off) + a normal eyebrow embroidery after. I took the offer thinking that price was good, tho I was skeptical about getting another embroidery after. Well, laser first, decide later.

(So this was me on the way to consultation)

(Look at my arched browsssss.)

The Process...
I was first sat down onto a chair and the beautician applied numbing cream onto my eyebrow, it was exactly the same "prepping" step you get from before getting eyebrow embroidery done. Waited for 30 minutes or so and was brought into a room for the laser session.

I was given a pair of sunglass-looking-shades to protect my eyes from the bright laser beams, and the total process took a mere 10-15 minutes.

Pain Factor
I would say between 3.5 - 4/5.... (?) 3.5 for the pain, 4/5 because of the discomfort.
Okay... I have a pretty high tolerance for pain but I would say this was pretty darn uncomfortable.. It was like having someone constantly shoot rubberbands onto your brows which caused me to get a shock everytime although I was anticipating every shot, and FYI was not comfortable at all since its an area close to the eyes. You'd smell burning smell (Chao Ta smell), and have your brows all turn yellow-white after... The pain was overall tolerable but it was definitely uncomfortable and looked weird after.

Here's a vid of the process I found on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=SG&hl=en-GB&v=NYpcAzDIO14

(see my Ah-Pek brows. Lol)

(I bled a little but not so much 'cuz it was a week before CNY and the beautician didn't want me to have bad brows thru the new year so she did "light settings" on the laser for mild removal.)

You would have to go back for laser every month and depending on individuals, the number of times may vary between different people. Up to date, I've went for 3 sessions and I think this may be the end of my sessions as the colour is almost gone..

(This was immediately after my 2nd session, where the beautician gave me a "powerful" removal session since the first was rather mild.... and yup, bled more tho pain factor was pretty much the same)

(At the end of the day my whole brow was pretty much covered in dried blood...You are not advised to put on any make up during the first few days, better still for a week to let the skin recover first.)

During my 3rd session, the beautician told me that you can do more times but each session has to be done in a controlled manner by a skilled beautician. That the light strength should not be overly strong or else it'd kill the hair follicles. So better be careful choosing the place you go to for this service.

So far for me it has been very good.. Colours slowly going away and my hairs are all growing out. I would say overall Im okay with the service provided at Best Beauty, the only complain is they're the kind who can be a little hard selling at time (also depending on which staff). I'm now on a regime of applying lash & brow serum, and all Im hoping for is that my hairs can grow out on its own so I do not need to do new embroidery again...

*keeping fingers crossed* :P

  1. Hi Vanessa,

Thanks for sharing your experience. I just had my eyebrow tattoos removed and I'm a little scared of how they'll heal because I bled excessively after the procedure and I'm starting to wonder if that much bleeding is normal! How long did it take your scabs to fall off and for the hairs to grow back? And did you do anything to "hide" them while they were healing? Mine look so bad I'm wondering if I'll have to cut bangs straight across!

  2. Hi Annie, thanks for reading my blog. :)

As you can see from the pictures, mine bled a whole lot as well but the bleeding normally stops in a couple of hours. They just turn into dried blood. Hmm.. scabs? I don't quite remember seeing any falling scabs but the bloody brows go away in around a week for me... like I could start drawing my brows from a week..

In total I did 4 laser sessions but after the 4th there was still a little faded brown left from my previous embroidery.. I did not do more as I went to another brow place to get new embroidery and the China lady used skin colour to "cover" the leftover colour... It did lighten a little but the lady did mention that i will need at least one more touch up to have it covered. So i guess i'll have the "skin colour"s touched up when i go for my eyebrow embroidery touch up.

Regarding the hairs that grow back, I think so far its fine, as in the hairs did grow back... tho some areas a little scarce.. It didnt bother me too much but ill just give it more time to tell. I heard from the beautician who did the laser for me that if you remove your eyebrow embroidery with too-strong-a-laser, you may harm your skin & follicle and risk not growing hairs again.. that was also the reason i decided not to go for my 5th session. Like I feel that it has suffered enough...

How long have you done your laser? Does it look bald because you got shaved before laser or if your hairs all turned white? Give it some time if you just did your laser.. Hope the sharing of my experience helped and gave you a little more confidence.. Let me know if you have other qns.. I'll be happy to share more. Cheers~ ;)

    3. Hi Vanny,
I just did my brow embroidery removal and they are all redish filled with blood stains. Unlike yours which seems like patches of dry blood, mine simply looks like red eyebrow which is scaring me. How long does it take for the dry blood to turn black and drop off as dry skin? Also is your eyebrow serum working for you? Im afraid my beautician might have used strong light on me which might kill my hair follicles :(

    4. Hey, initial stages were a little 'wet' since the wound was raw. Subsequently it dried up to dry patches of blood. I'm sure yours will get better? Just give it some time k, you just did the laser removal and need time for it to heal.

  5. While a tattooed eyebrow is more permanent, an embroidered one would look more natural. I hope your tattoo removal sessions progressed smoothly, so you could begin the embroidery as soon as possible. Keep us posted!

I just went through laser removal yesterday. It was painful. How long an interval did you wait to get the next session again? As I knew you went for 3 sessions."

      Replying to September Kitty BB:

Hi Dear, firstly I would like to thank you for reading my blog. Im not sure how come your comment got deleted as Im sure I did not remove it. Yes indeed the lasering is much more painful as compared to the embroidery process itself, but thats what we go through to achieve the perfect new brows heh. I did this lasering a couple of years ago which I can't remember exactly how far apart the 3 sessions were but if I didn't remember wrongly, it was about 1 month apart. The skin where you lasered has to be more or less healed from the burn before you can get the next session done. This is because if you hurt the skin too deeply, you risk having the follicles on that area die and possibly not grow anymore hairs (if this makes sense to you). So yea, I would say about a month to be safe. Did the beautician who helped you with the lasering not advise on the after care? Im sure you would have some sort of cream to apply after your laser session.

Anyway, hope that I've answered you qns. Feel free to leave more comments if you have more qns. Cheers. ;)

  13. Hello Vanessa,

I got my eyebrows tattooed a week ago and I hate them. I had thick eyebrows already but the tattoo artists did gradiation and made it too dark and straight.. I stumbled upon your blog and it was very informative! I am wondering a few things though: Do you know which laser method you used? Is it the R20 method, where they do 4 passes/treatments in one session? I am considering on doing this method but I'm worried about my eyebrow hairs. I'm traveling right now and it's probably not a big deal that they turn white, because I could probably dye them after, but is there also hair loss? Or did you start losing eyebrow hairs after a couple of treatments? How long did it take your eye hairs to grow back or to outgrow the white discoloration? Please let me know, thanks so much!

    1. Hi there, how's your brows now? Is it better after fading out?

Regarding your qns, I cannot remember the type of laser as the shop only had one kind.
There wasn't hair loss just burnt hairs, and def turned all white. And bcuz they're were burnt, some parts had no hair for a while (imagine hair burnt n gone, not hairloss - there's a difference). It wasn't a big deal bcuz both my brows were already "whitish" so didn't make any diff in some parts of the hairs gone since it wasn't visible.

Hmmm.. I can't remember how long it took for my brows to grow back but I would say from the lasering sessions, to healing, and retouching with new embroidery, took some what at least half a year or so. Was a terrible wait but def worth it. Love my new brows now.

      Hope my ans helps. :)

    1. Hi there! Why do you already hate your brows? Usually it takes 3 months for the colour to totally settle down. Perhaps wait out a little more to see if you really dislike it then decide on the next move? Yes, I took 4 sessions. The colours were not totally gone but it was enough for me to get new brows - think by then about 85-90% of the old colours were removed. Yes my hairs grew back but surely it will take some time. Hope my answers helped. :)

    1. Hi Janice, firstly thank you for reading my blog. Also thank you for your compliment. For me at that time when I realised I needed to change my brows, I was in my mid-twenties. I got my brows done when I was 19 and it was the high-arched type which was so "in" during my teenage days, you know aka those "ah lian" brows? Hahahaha. The high-arched brows made me look old n I couldnt take it anymore, some more I was already not a teenager anymore so I couldnt pull off the "mature" look so I had to re-do my brows. Wanted to but the arch was too high that the beauty therapist said that I couldnt do new brows over it bcuz then I will have 2 lines. So I had no choice but to laser and re-do. It was not an easy period bcuz my brows would b usually red or botak, but im sure glad I did the laser n re-did to a shape I like now. I think brows are something VERY important, even with good plastic surgery or any beauty enhancements, with bad brows it just doesnt justify the beauty of our faces. Ill sure teach my girl next time what to do with her brows, not to be like me just anyhow plucked my brows till too thin or anything. Now my tail doesnt quite grow anymore, but thank God theres good embroidery these days. :)
